ABOUT US:

Christian Barrett was an eleventh grade student at Moravian Academy in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania when he decided to start Photosynthesis.org. He is an avid backpacker, skier, sailor and basketball player, all which fueled the notion of taking a proactive stance against Global Warming instead of a reactive stance which we can so easily adopt. Backpacking especially motivated the creation of this non-profit organization. Anyone who has hiked the Appalachian Trail near Palmerton can see one of the largest ecological disasters of our time. A zinc plant that was able to poison a mountain with heavy metals, not to mention a town of Palmerton, lead to the EPA's creation of a Superfund site which has since taken dramatic measures in correcting the damage caused by the zinc plant.

PALMERTON, PA SUPERFUND SITE MARCH 2003

While this is not a result of Global Warming, it illustrates what the absence of trees can do to the countryside. On that mountain only mangled corpses of trees exist, the soil blown away and all the understory growth destroyed. This very site can haunt those who look to the future for an ecologically sound society. From this it was decided to attack the greatest threat to the ecology of the world-- Global Warming. Global Warming can change climates, not only temperate climates but the frequency and strengths of storms, average amounts of rainfall and could lead to mass desertification. The best means we could think of was a website that would combat Global Warming through the mailing of trees and the offering of a free lesson plan which was conceived in 1999. This quickly changed from a website to a non-profit organization. Now we offer not only free trees and fantastic lesson plans but also information on how an individual can help in this matter and various links to other important non-profit organizations and websites.
